When Arsenal lose to Manchester City, there is often not much to be ashamed of. For instance, City are Premier League Royalty, winners of the EPL on many occasions. However, the manner of Arsenal’s loss is the problem…it set new records!
First Time in 67 Years That Arsenal Have Lost The First 3 Games…
You have to go all the way back to 1954 to find when Arsenal have last lost the first 3 games of the season..obviously well before the EPL(English Premier League) was established.
And yet, this record is only the first of 3 unwelcome records that Arsenal set on this night.
Only 19% Possession..
Many times Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has lamented the fact that Arsenal lost despite controlling the game. On previous occasions, Mikel said that a lack of quality finishing in the final third, or weakness on a set piece, undid the Gunners from a deserved victory. This occasion can have no such excuse.
The Gunners managed a paltry 19% possession! Their reported previous lowest in the Premier League, according to Optus Sports commentators, was nearly double that, at 31%!
Xhaka Sees Red!
Granit Xhaka, fresh from signing a new contract extension, has always had a volatile reputation.
With a whopping 11 red cards in club Football, Granit is known for poor discipline on occasion. However, Arteta had only just said that his senior players needed to set the way for his young squad…and so, with his 4th red card since joining the Gunners, one every 41 games or so, Granit set a poor example…one sure to reignite his volatile relationship with Arsenal fans.
Come On Arsenal!
Clearly things can’t get much worse for the Gunners..oops, maybe we shouldn’t speak too early! However, as lifelong Gunners fans, last night was a night to forget for so many reasons.
It’s time for Arsenal to show why they are considered a ‘big club’, and not just for setting poor records, as they did against Manchester City!
